“Children require proper nutrition to fuel their growth and development. Those undiagnosed with celiac disease often experience nutritional deficiencies like poor bone health very prematurely,” Mager explains. “While removing gluten is vital for treating the condition, gluten-free products can also lack key nutrients like folate, iron and fiber.”

Cutting Through the Gluten-Free Confusion

Grounded in extensive research yet designed for everyday use, the guide aims to help families avoid those pitfalls. It distills evidence into an easy-to-follow format, addressing concerns that frequently blindsided the Rigneys and families like them.  

“There are so many nutrition myths about gluten-free diets online. We wanted to provide evidence-based guidelines that families could understand and apply,” says Mager. “The ultimate goal is taking off some of that overwhelming burden so parents don’t have to constantly worry whether their child is eating a healthy, balanced diet.”

Inside its colorful pages, the gluten-free food guide maps out all the key elements for optimal nourishment in one place. Vibrant visuals make it accessible even for young kids to identify recommended foods like fruits, veggies, proteins, dairy and gluten-free grains.

It also includes gluten-free recipe ideas, special considerations like vegetarian/vegan diets, and advice on shopping for affordable gluten-free options.

“There are so many little things health professionals know that can really help families – like how to make nutritious school lunches and snacks, or ways to dine out while sticking to the gluten-free diet,” says Mager. Her team surveyed not just medical experts but also parents of kids with celiac disease to ensure the guide addressed their most pressing needs.

Empowering Families Through Knowledge

For Rigney, now a program coordinator with the Canadian Celiac Association’s Edmonton chapter, having that all-in-one resource would have been “invaluable” when her daughter was first diagnosed.

“Instead of researching general gluten-free diets, this guide tells you specifically how to build a healthy foundation for kids, with new meal ideas to keep things varied and fun,” she says. “There’s a real sense of empowerment, for both parents and children, in understanding your dietary needs so thoroughly.”

The gluten-free foods for kids guide is already making a difference in improving nutritional intake for newly diagnosed youngsters. Preliminary results show families’ diets becoming richer in fruits, veggies and other nutrient-dense foods within just 6 months of using the guide.

Its positive impacts could extend even further, according to Mager. “We’ll be evaluating not just health benefits, but whether it helps families shop more economically and adhere to the gluten-free diet long-term.” With gluten-free products tending towards higher price tags, the cost-saving potential is significant for cash-strapped households.

The guide’s simple, visual-friendly formatting is proving useful for health professionals too. It serves as an easy-to-follow handout for general practice dietitians who need to counsel gluten-free families but may lack specialized expertise.
