Poor Things is a 2023 steampunk black comedy film directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, based on Tony McNamara’s script. It is based on Alasdair Gray’s 1992 novel of the same name, and it stars Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, Ramy Youssef, Christopher Abbott, and Jerrod Carmichael.
The narrative revolves around a young Victorian lady who, after being ruthlessly revived by a scientist following her suicide, embarks on a journey of self-discovery and sexual liberation with a debauched barrister.
In a bit more detail, the story is about Bella, a young woman, who is brought back to life by her guardian, Dr. Godwin Baxter, a scientist. Bella is eager to learn about the world around her, although with Baxter’s protection. She runs away with Duncan Wedderburn, a sleek and debauched lawyer, and travels across countries to see more. Bella, free of the biases of her period, seeks equality and liberty.
In the movie, Emma Stone will be coming to life as Bella Baxter and we’ve finally gotten a first look at the film with a wild new trailer from Searchlight Pictures. The teaser is completely strange, focusing on Bella’s rebirth and desire to live a free life, as well as her brief affair with Ruffalo’s character, Duncan Wedderburn.
Poor Things, also starring Margaret Qualley, Ramy Youssef, Jerrod Carmichael, and Christopher Abbott, is set to premiere this year at the Venice Film Festival in August and will be released in theaters on Sept 8.
Although most of the world will not see the picture until the Christmas season, it will have its global debut at the 80th Venice picture Festival, which runs from August 30 to September 9.
